Why Have Your Vehicle Inspected by the SAAQ?

The SAAQ has put various measures in place to ensure the mechanical soundness of all vehicles travelling on Quebec roads. A mechanical inspection is a thorough check of the vehicle’s main components, carried out by a SAAQ-approved agent.

This process is at your expense and is mandatory to obtain or maintain the right to drive certain types of vehicles.

1. One-time inspection (mandatory cases)

For individuals, a one-time mechanical inspection is required by law to register or return to service the following categories of vehicles :

🛠️ Modified or homemade : vehicle built by hand or having undergone structural modifications.

🌎 From outside Quebec : any used vehicle imported from another province or another country.

🗓️ Stored for more than 12 months : vehicle taken off the road or not authorized to travel on public roads for a continuous period of more than 12 months, and which the owner wishes to re-register.

🚍 Minibuses for personal use : designed to carry a family of at least 9 people.

2. Mandatory periodic inspection (professionals)

For businesses and professionals, a periodic mechanical inspection must be carried out every 6 or 12 months, depending on use, for :

🚌 Minibuses (except for strictly personal use).

🚗 Driving school vehicles (cars, motorcycles, mopeds).

🏫 School transportation vehicles.

🚕 Taxis and passenger transport vehicles.

🚨 Emergency vehicles.

⚠️ Authority to require inspection : a one-time inspection may also be required if the SAAQ or a peace officer believes that the vehicle poses a potential danger on the road.
